SYRIAC and ASSYRIAN-AMERICANS STAND IN SOLIDARITY TO PROTEST THE HEINOUS ACTS OF ISIS AGAINST CHRISTIANS IN IRAQ & SYRIA
People of all race, sex, and creed join together at Los Angeles Federal Building to Demand Action

LOS ANGELES – On August 2, 2014, a worldwide coordinated effort of demonstrations under the moniker “DEMAND FOR ACTION”, across the U.S., Europe, Asia and Australia, will be taking place to raise awareness of the ongoing ethnic and religious cleansing of the Iraqi & Syrian Christian communities. In solidarity, Syriac/Aramaic and Assyrian Christians living in Los Angeles County will rally together at the Federal Building on Wilshire Blvd. to protest the persecution and oppression their family members and friends are facing daily in Iraq and Syria. Since the takeover of Iraq’s second-largest city Mosul in June, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) has systematically assaulted the Christian community, which has been indigenous to that area for over 6000 years. The ultimatum has been for Christians to convert to Islam, pay a tax that is often much higher than what a family can afford, or die.

Over the past month ISIS has continued its assault on Christians living in Iraq & Syria. To easily identify the Christians of Mosul, ISIS has marked the Arabic letter “noon”, which stands for Nazarene, an Arabic reference to Christians, on their front doors, as a method to target these individuals. As of today, a Christian community of over several millennia has been completely removed and uprooted from Mosul. ISIS however will not stop there in their ultimate goal of ridding the entire area of its indigenous minorities.

“My people are experiencing unspeakable horror and grief at the hands of these radicals. There is a Christian genocide happening in Northern Iraq and no one is doing anything about it”, stated Delilah George, public spokeswoman for Demand for Action-LA. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon has called this “a crime against humanity” and called on the western countries to intervene.

“It is critical for the Iraqi government to protect the safety of its citizens. The issue of religion, ethnicity or political party is not important right now, we must work together to tackle the causes of safety and protect innocent men, women and children in Iraq”, noted George.

People of different faiths and ethnicities will come together and stand with us in solidarity for our plight.
